Return to Monkey Island Announced

The legendary adventure game series Monkey Island is set to get an all new entry to the franchise this year. The new game will be called Return to Monkey Island, and development is being led by original series creator Ron Gilbert at his new studio, Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox.

The game is being developed in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games. The trailer itself doesn’t really reveal anything about the new story, but the new game will reportedly take place after Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. The last game in the series was actually Telltale’s Tales of Monkey Island released in 2009, but Return to Monkey Island appears to be unrelated to that game.

Gilbert revealed on Twitter that he has actually been working on the game in “complete secrecy” for the past two years, but he hasn’t revealed exactly why he chose to make another Monkey Island game (a fact brought to our attention by the unfortunate skull in the trailer):

Gilbert isn’t working on the game alone, of course. Also joining Gilbert in development is Dave Grossman, a writer and programmer for the original Monkey Island Series as well as various other Lucasfilm Games projects. Also in the trailer, we can see that the original composers Michael Land and Peter McConnel are back to make the music for this new game, as well as Clint Bajakian who worked on Monkey Island 2 as well as other Lucasfilm games as well. Lastly, Dominic Armato will reprise is role as the would-be-pirate Guybrush Threepwood.

No specific date for release has been given for Return to Monkey Island other than the release window of “2022,” but we should definitely expect more information about the continuing adventures of Guybrush Threepwood in the coming months.
