Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Announced

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was announced at PlayStation’s Future of Gaming event. The title will take place after the previous Ratchet and Clank game by Insomniac from 2016. The game will very likely be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, along with Insomniac’s other big announcement, Spiderman: Miles Morales

The Ratchet and Clank reboot came out in 2016 and saw huge success on the PlayStation 4. The game itself is a puzzle platformer, it also features a hybrid combat system that combines melee combat, ranged combat, and the use of different gadgets from Ratchet. According to developers, Ratchet’s new arsenal will be more exciting than ever due to the new improvements made to the DualSense controller.

The developer also noted that ray tracing will be put to use in the upcoming sequel, and other new PlayStation features like 3D audio will also likely be implemented. The controller itself will now include adaptive triggers as well as haptic feedback. More details regarding how the game will implement PlayStation 5’s new features will likely be announced soon.

The trailer showed Ratchet and Clank flying through multiple dimensional rifts, which threw them into different environments. A few of the environments include: a pirate ship, a rain forest full of dinosaurs, and a cyber-futuristic city. This was a strategic way to show off the PlayStation 5’s new and improved SSD, which will allow much faster loading times into new levels and environments.

The end of the trailer also featured a female version of Ratchet, who is either an alternate version of Ratchet from another dimension or a new character entirely. The trailer did not include a reference to a release date, but fans will likely hear about the specifics of the game soon on the PlayStation website.
