Microsoft announced back in March the specifications of Xbox Series X, the company stated that users will be able to expand the storage of the console with an external HDD via a USB 3.2 port and a Seagate M.2 expansion card. However, next-gen games are only be supported via Seagate’s expansion card.

Is important to mention that Xbox Series S does not feature a disc drive, the only way to extend the library of next-gen games is through Seagate’s proprietary card. A high retail price of the expansion card might be enough to deter Series S’ customers as the console is already a digital-only box with 512Gbs of storage.

The reason behind the expensive cost of the expansion card is that it matches the specifications of the Xbox’s internal storage.

“Seagate is thrilled to be a key player in next-generation gaming. With a new standard in performance, games will be more dynamic, visually stunning, and immersive than ever. Seagate’s Xbox Series X Storage Expansion Card technology delivers additional game storage at peak speeds, replicating the console’s internal SSD experience. We are proud to join forces with Xbox and can’t wait to help gamers immerse themselves in the high-fidelity experience.”

Seagate’s NVMeSSD features the new ‘Xbox Velocity Architecture’, this technology allows developers to radically improve asset streaming and effectively multiply available memory. Aside from effectively eliminating loading times, games will be able to feature more “richer and more dynamic living worlds unlike anything ever seen before.”
