According to a former Bend employee and Senior Animator, the studio’s live service multiplayer title that was announced to be cancelled earlier this year was due to not enough progress made on it for several years. “We didn’t make enough substantial progress over the 3 years I was there,” he wrote as a reply to a comment on Twitter. “I saw the eventual cancellation coming before it.” This would suggest that the studio did not make enough progress to meet required milestones which contributed to the project’s eventual cancellation.
According to a past Bloomberg report, Sony canceled two previously unannounced live service games. These games are from Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio. According to Jason Schrier, both games were “live service” projects “designed to draw recurring revenue from players.” The Bluepoint title was a live service game based on God of War which has been in development since the studio helped God of War Ragnarok back in 2022.
A company spokesperson confirmed the cancellations in a statement, claiming the two games were canceled “following a recent review” and that PlayStation will continue making both online and single-player games. Neither studio will be closed, but information on layoffs were not disclosed. However, the company says it is “working closely with Bend and Bluepoint to determine what are the next projects and plan to do everything we can to ensure there is minimal business impact.” “Bend and Bluepoint are highly accomplished teams who are valued members of the PlayStation Studios family, and we are working closely with each studio to determine what are the next projects,” they said.
