Sony Working on a Counter-Strategy for Xbox Game Pass Says David Jaffe

God of War and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe affirms that Sony Interactive Entertainment is well aware of Xbox Game Pass and will deploy a counter-strategy in the following months.

“I’ve said time and again that people who are writing Jim Ryan’s obituary are way premature,” he said in a video published on his YouTube channel yesterday.”

“We had the guy on the show yesterday that had made the petition to fire Jim Ryan and I was like, ‘dude, that’s way premature’ because Jim Ryan doesn’t owe anybody, Sony doesn’t owe anybody, the truth about what’s coming and what their counterpunch to Game Pass is.”

“What I can tell you is I know they are doing some stuff because I know people at Sony who have told me that they are doing some stuff,” adding that “there will be a response to Game Pass.”

David Jaffe explains that the strategy is still a secret, he argues that PlayStation might opt for emulating PS3, PS2, and PS1 games and add Trophies. Something that doesn’t seem likely as Jim Ryan has stated that older games do not look good on modern hardware. It’s also important to consider that Xbox Series X|S is great at emulating all the Xbox games, and it’s the clear winner of the backward compatible software.

“That would make me go, ‘I don’t think the man has a clue’, because that’s not going to compete with Game Pass, but I don’t know if that’s the case, but I don’t think Jim Ryan is ready to throw under the bus at all.” Says Jaffe when considering the possibility of Sony emulating older software via PlayStation Now as the counter-strategy.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has stated that the Game Pase business strategy wouldn’t work for PlayStation. The executive told GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation Studios’ budget for AAA games often grows over $100 million.

Xbox Game Pass is thriving under the leadership of Phil Spencer and the heavy investment from Microsoft, the service announced recently that 18 million players are now subscribed. Xbox has affirmed that Game Pass’ growth is completely sustainable.

It’s expected that PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now will be the answer to Xbox Game Pass, back in October 2019 Sony slashed PlayStation Now’s prices and has been constantly adding more exciting games each month. As of April 2020, PlayStation Now had over 2.2 million subscribers.

Sony launched the Play at Home initiative, the PlayStation Plus Collection, and even included Final Fantasy VII Remake as part of last month’s free-to-play games on the service.
