Remedy Developer Calls Xbox Series S “Trouble”

Xbox has just revealed the technical specifications of Xbox Series S, as the system is somewhat different than Series X,  Remedy’s Senior Technical Producer, Sasan Sepehr has expressed his legitimate concern via Twitter. The recently announced Xbox Series S will now force third-party Xbox developers to spend more resources and time to optimize a game for a second console.

Xbox has designed a unique strategy for the next-generation of consoles, they opted for selling the customers the most powerful console and the most compact and affordable alternative. However, Xbox’s decision might be a tough pill to swallow for some third-party developers who may just see PlayStation as a more efficient platform.

Mark Cerny’s technical reveal of the specifications of PlayStation 5 was a showcase aimed for developers where Cerny explained that PS5 has a balance between evolution and revolution, the system is designed to reduce the required time for developers to learn the new programming model. Cerny mentioned a learning curve of 1 month, a significant improvement from the 1-2 months required for the PS4 architecture.

Developers have been speaking in the last months, some informed Jason Schreier that there is not much difference between PS5 and Series X, in practice, an Xbox Series X developer would find a hard time to reach the console’s full potential.

The general consensus is that these things are both extremely powerful and both very similar in a lot of ways, both do different things in really cool ways. These are both extremely impressive pieces of technology.

What I’m hearing from the people who are actually working on these things, working on the metal, is that the Xbox Series X is not significantly more powerful than the PS5 despite this teraflops number.
