Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros. and Kirby, shared a message where he talks about the challenges of implementing a unique character like Steve in a game that is fast-paced and with plenty of balancing issues to be faced.

The plan for the fighter is easy to create, the graphics should also be straightforward, the motion is relative simple, and the sound is comparable to other fighters.

There are plenty of things to consider, but we don’t need to implement any voices. What’s difficult, however, is the programming work required to bring the character to life. It’s a massive challenge, plus, we have to rework all our existing stages so that blocks can be placed in them.

Adding Steve was not an easy task for developers, this was hinted by Sakurai who reveals that a lot of planning was needed to implement the character into the game while retaining his unique traits and abilities from Minecraft.

“What about biomes? We also need to consider things like those, and most importantly, how do we adjust the game balance to accommodate the new fighter?

Making everything work well together in the game including the fighter’s physical attacks and their short reach, will be extremely hard. They’d end up being a really unsual fighter. Despite all that, it looks like we’re somehow going to be able to release the fighter, that’s why we’re showing you the reveal movie today.

Nintendo confirmed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass 2 will feature six new fighters, Steve will be available as a standalone purchase for 6 USD in the Challenger Pack 7. The bundle of all fighters is being sold for 30 USD.
