Metroid Dread Announced At Nintendo Direct

Hopes were high this Nintendo Direct that we might hear something about the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4. While we did not quite receive the showing we expected they did confirm that the game is still being developed. This was stated, however, right before a new Metroid game was announced. Entitled Metroid Dread, this new game in the series will return the game franchise to its roots.

The trailer opens up with Samus Aran entering into a room and looking around. The camera then gives a first-person view, similar to the Metroid Prime series. A message that states Metroid 5, might lead you to believe that Prime 4 has taken so long that we are skipping over it, but of course, this is the 5th game in the original series.

If Metroid Dread sounds familiar, that is because it has been in development for quite a long time. It was first planned to release in the late 2000s as a Sequel to the Gameboy Advance game. Appearing on an internal games list of DS games set to be announced in the future. Of the games on that list, only Metroid Dread has yet to be released.

Since then the game was also referenced in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption,  though this was not meant to be taken as proof that the game still existed. Regardless, Metroid Dread has often appeared of Critics lists for most requested games from Nintendo.

It was stated in 2010 that it was no longer in development but if development were to resume it would start from scratch. The success of Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of the 1991 game, most likely helped renew interest in the title.

It was announced that the game will be released on October 8, 2021.
