343 Industries is toying with the idea of increasing the player caps in their re-release of the classic titles included in the Halo: Master Chief Colection. The targeted number is to increase the player cap all the way to 60 players. This news comes straight from 343 Industries producer Sean Swidersky. Compared to the current size of matches this is a potentially huge increase.
The developer recently appeared on an Xbox stream playing the collection when the subject was explored. He stated that “To tease at it, we are doing some investigations on increasing player counts above 16.” before going on and explaining: “Halo’s epic, if we can add more people, which, again, you can, but obviously performance and some of the other consoles… If we can add that kind of stuff to go higher than 16 players in these classic games, hell, get up to 40, 60, you know what I mean?”
These numbers far exceed the size of matches currently, as big team battle, pitting two teams of 8 against each other is the largest match currently. The biggest question is how this change is planned to be implemented. As it currently stands, Master Chief Collection has plenty of matchmaking lobbies so one more offering this will not be too crazy to see. Each Halo usually includes a few big maps but the scope of games from then even at their largest maps are relatively small by comparison.
This plan might also tie into plans for the upcoming Halo Infinite. For the first time in the series, the multiplayer will be free-to-play, relying on staples such as the battle pass. They have also stated the plan is to support Halo Infinite for multiple years. There is the possibility would see them draw from the Master Chief Collection for their free multiplayer Or vise Versa.
Halo Infinite is slated for the holiday of this year for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Microsoft Windows. Stay tuned at Gaming Instincts via Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook for more gaming news.
