Deathverse: Let It Die Announced At State of Play

The Suda 51 game that gave us a bizarre grim reaper named Uncle Death riding around on a skateboard, Let It Die, is getting a surprise sequel in Deathverse: Let It Die. The game was showcased during the PlayStation State of Play event on October 27, and given a release date of some time in 2022.

While Let it Die was free to play a title that managed to blend the combat of Suda 51 games in the past, with a souls-like approach to progression, the sequel aims to be a multiplayer, specifically battle royale, experience pitting players with zero fashion sense against each other. While the game will be developed by Supertrick Games, who worked on the first game, Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda 51 will not be attached. In other news involving Suda 51, his studio Grasshopper Manufacture was recently Acquired by NetEase.

This game is set hundreds of years after the events of Let It Die, and revolves around an event known as the Death Jamboree. On a PlayStation blog post, Producer for Supertrick Games Shuji Ishikawa explains:

Death Jamboree is produced and aired by the national television station YBC (Yotsuyama Broadcasting Company). Young people everywhere are attracted to the program via public recruitment sessions and promises of massive prize money.

The lucrative cash prizes and thrilling survival gameplay have attracted a fanatical viewing audience, making the program a worldwide phenomenon. Players will take part in the show as ordinary contestants who have appeared on the show to crush their rivals.

With Squid Game fever currently sweeping the world, this game should definitely be on a lot of people’s radars. Entering the Death Jamboree players are given a ” special “Wilson” unit, a robotic device that assists you in combat.” This unit can be upgraded, allowing it to transform into the many weapons shown within the trailer. It can also be used to call a protective shield or shoot stun rounds at enemies.

Let It Die was a bizarre game, but what’s even bizarre is how it came to be. Initially, it was planned as a more traditional Suda 51 game called Lily Bergamo, about a girl in the future fighting demons. Somewhere along the line that evolved into men and women in their underwear fighting up a tower of some kind. I will definitely look forward to Deathverse: Let It Die when it drops in 2022.
