Bond is Going Full Woke And That’s Not Good

In a recent Monstervine interview, 007 First Light cinematics director Martin Emborg suggested that the upcoming game will present a more modern take on James Bond, reflecting what he described as “modern values.” The comments have sparked debate among fans, and suggests that the franchise is moving in a direction similar to other recent high-profile releases.

When asked whether Bond would retain his classic traits, including his reputation as a womanizer, Emborg said, “Yeah, you will [see that],” before adding that the character has “evolved” and that a traditional portrayal of Bond would be “tone deaf” by today’s standards. “So, he’s evolved through the decades, and obviously, we reflect modern values,” he said. “So it’s not going to be your old school Bond, which would just be tone deaf in this day, right? He’s a modern guy.”

In a separate interview, franchise art director Rasmus Poulsen addressed questions about whether IO Interactive had deliberately moved away from certain “outdated” character traits. He explained that the team had “orchestrated a version of these traits that we feel feels appropriate.” The shift has drawn comparisons to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which faced similar criticism for reworking long-established themes and characters in a direction to align with modern sensibilities. That title went on to experience a divisive reception, with critics and fans split over whether those changes benefited the series or alienated its core audience. The game also went on to underperform commercially compared with expectations and past entries in the franchise. As a result, 007 First Light is now facing early scrutiny from parts of the community concerned that the franchise may suffer a similar fate as it redefines Bond for a new era.
