Yume Nikki: Dream Diary Out Now on Playism and Steam

Yume Nikki: Dream Diary Out Now on Playism and Steam

Yume Nikki has been hailed as one of the greatest (and most controversial) games ever created with RPG Maker. YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- is a collaborative show of the utmost respect for auteur Kikiyama-san’s groundbreaking release. The Kadokawa RPG Maker team has paired up with Active Gaming Media’s development team of ardent Yume Nikki fans on this new entry into the series that takes inspiration from modern indie classics.

Features

  • Yume Nikki’s legendary characters and locations reimagined in 3D
  • 6 expansive dreams to explore
  • Exploring dreams with gameplay evocative of modern indie classics
  • An inventive concept that sets the imagination running
  • Deep item- and Effect-driven dream exploration
  • NASU the minigame: Evolved

Dream Diary stars a teenage hikkikomori, a Japanese word for young people who prefer the safety of their own rooms to the unknowns of the outside world. In dreams, however, she adventures to a variety of places — including, at the game’s beginning, the streets of Japan. Based on this teaser, it sure looks like there’s nothing to be afraid of. She’s just on a pleasant jog through town, it seems.

And then she reaches a pool of blood at the end of her path, with no explanation or remains.

Good things it’s all a dream, and one she immediately wakes up from. Playism says that these kinds of inexplicable, creepy occurrences are what players can expect to experience throughout Dream Diary, just as they did in the original Yume Nikki. It’s admittedly not as … bizarre as the opening of the original game, however.

The launch trailer feels somewhat darker than the original game. While deeply surreal and occasionally sinister in tone, the original never felt violent. This new game has a much more overtly horrific feel to it, with Madotsuki’s dreams having shifted somewhat from the abstract and nonsensical (although those are still present and correct) to the grimly realistic, full of worn-down hallways and crumbling urban environments. These strange structures are populated with a significantly more menacing breed of creatures as well, some of which look overtly hostile.
