Microsoft has officially announced “Project Helix,” which it describes as the “next generation of Xbox console.” A short teaser trailer showing a logo was also released on the official Xbox account. In a recent but separate tweet, Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma commented on the reveal. “Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console,” wrote Sharma. “Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”
According to former Xbox president Sarah Bond in an interview back in October, “The next-gen console is going to be a very premium, very high-end curated experience.” Additionally, when asked about the future state of Xbox exclusives, she alluded to the fact that they will become rarer. “We’re really seeing people evolve way past that,” she said. “The biggest games in the world are available everywhere. You look at Call of Duty, you look at Minecraft, you look at Fortnite, you look at Roblox. That’s actually what’s really driving community in gaming.
That’s where people gather. The idea of locking it to one store or one device is antiquated for most people. You want to be able to play with your friends anywhere, regardless of what they’re on. And we’re really leaning into that with [the ROG Xbox Ally] because it just opens up another way for you to play. As does cloud, as does PC, as do the consoles that we all own and have in our living rooms.”
According to past reports from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead and Windows Central’s Jez Corden, Microsoft has been considering a 2027 launch window for its next-gen Xbox console. Moore’s Law is Dead also claimed that the console’s AMD accelerated processing unit, which powers the console, is called Magnus. The APU will also have a chiplet GPU based on AMD’s Radeon products.
