Ubisoft Battle Royal Hyper Scape Is Shutting Down

Ubisoft has announced that they are ending development on Hyper Scape, their attempt at the Battle Royale genre that has become increasingly popular over recent years.  The publisher confirmed that they planned to stop development, before fully shutting down the game on April 28th, 2022.

A message from the Hyper Scape team was posted, in which they said:

We set out to create a vertical, close-quarters, and fast-paced shooter experience and we are extremely grateful to our community for joining us on our journey. We will be taking key learnings from this game into future products.

Hyper Scape was first released into open beta back in July of 2020 before it received a full launch in August of that year. By the point it entered the Battle Royale game, the space was already packed with competitors such as Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone which both similarly focused on first-person combat. Since its release, the genre would become even more crowded.

The writing had seemed to be on the wall for quite some time as well, with updates that have started to slow down over the past few months. With the game’s player numbers has also been shrinking, it was to be expected that it was only a matter of time until the game came to an end.

Despite this setback, the free-to-play market will see multiple Ubisoft games release into it soon. A Tom Clancy mashup title XDefiant will bring squad-based multiplayer, with Ghost Recon Frontlines being another take at Battle Royale for Ubisoft using a more familiar franchise.

Ubisoft has recently announced they intend to push into NFTs using their new platform Quartz. With the company investing in the growing blockchain tech, it would make sense that multiplayer games they develop will target the free-to-play market, aiming to convert those players into investors in their marketplace.
