The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes Coming In 2021

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe and Supermassive Games released a trailer announcing a release for the third installment of The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes in 2021.

The installment will be the third of eight total episodes. The episodes, so far, have little to nothing to do with one another in their stories and characters. If those stories intersect later in the series, has yet to be seen.

The story takes place in Iraq, 2003, following CIA field operative Rachel King as she investigates a “suspected underground chemical weapons facility.” The elite military unit accompanying her is ambushed upon their arrival and, in the ensuing fight, an earthquake opens up the earth, sending the troops into the ruins of an ancient, Sumerian temple.

The trailer shows clips of dark caves, pools of blood, and demon statues with a voice saying: “They say the souls of the dead went deep underground in the House of Ashes, where they were plagued by the demons of the Underworld.

The previous two entries, Man of Medan and Little Hope, have kept a similar gameplay and narrative format to developer Supermassive Games break-out hit: Until Dawn. In Until Dawn, who the player controls can change from scene to scene. Gameplay involves making decisions on what the character does or says next, effecting where the narrative goes from that decision. This can result in a character permanently dying and narrative continuing without them. This format continues in the episodes released so far. Whether the moral compass mechanic from Man of Medan will make a return has not been revealed, however.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, the third installment in the series, is coming in 2021.
