According to leaker TheGhostofHope, citing anonymous sources, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was originally planned as a launch title for the next-generation Xbox console alongside Grand Theft Auto 6. The leaker claims the new plan now involves two separate Call of Duty titles for the next Xbox: a traditional multiplayer release and a standalone Zombies game.
“Sources indicate to me that the delay on the next Xbox has ‘hurt’ a lot of COD’s marketing plans, as they wanted Modern Warfare 4 to be a launch title and draw a lot of hype to compete for people’s attention alongside GTA VI,” the leaker wrote on social media. “Because of this delay, the idea of two Call of Duty games launching with the next Xbox has been floated. A traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and a standalone Zombies title presumably developed by Treyarch. Likely similar to that of Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered were both released together.”
The leaker also claimed that Microsoft wants Activision to rely less on annual releases for the franchise in the future. “Microsoft wants Activision to be more agile and less attached to annualized releases in the future,” they wrote. “The consensus is that a more quick and coherent product development pipeline would have allowed them to cash in on the extraction shooter hype sooner with a DMZ update, for example.” It’s worth noting these are just rumors for now and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Following the massive sales dip of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and significant backlash on several aspects of the game, Activision announced back in December that it will end back-to-back game releases for the franchise. “We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games,” reads the official blogpost. “The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.” The post goes on to clarify that “the future of Call of Duty is very strong and we believe our best days are ahead of us”. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launched on November 14. It is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, Microsoft Store, and Battle.net.
