Sony Hints a New Feature For PS4

According with reports from Forbes a new feature is being planned by the developers at Sony Interactive Entertainment to fight back at Xbox’s recent announcement of Dolby Atmos support for Xbox One and their next-gen system.

Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed at this year’s CES event that they’re working on a new audio processing software called “360 Reality Audio” this will be very similar of what Microsoft is getting with Dolby Atmos, it basically is a technology to process surround audio.

Below is Sony’s description of the new technology:

“360 Reality Audio produces a three-dimensional sound field where the different sounds and musical elements can be projected from anywhere inside a 360-degree space, powered by Sony’s object-based spatial audio technology.”

In response to a question on whether 360 Reality Audio might have implications beyond the music applications announced at the CES, Kurozumi said this: “We’d like to start very, very simple, so we can make a good foundation, a strong core, for a future-proof technology. But of course, we are thinking about two or three directions in the future. One, obviously, is applying 360 sound to video. But also we’re thinking about what it would be like applied to games. Especially in an interactive capacity.”

Sony revealed at the CES that it’s been working on 360 Reality Audio for five years. Which might explain why its PS4 hasn’t pursued Dolby Atmos or DTS:X for games so far, choosing to wait instead until its home-grown (and thus license-free) next-gen audio format is ready to go.

It’s possible at this stage in the PS4’s life that Sony might just position 360 Reality Audio gaming support for the PS5, rather than trying to add it to the PS4 family. And it’s worth reflecting, too, that Sony arguably doesn’t need to bring lots more innovation to its PS4 platform given how comfortably it has outsold its Xbox One rival.

Imagine playing GTA V and being able to hear all sounds of the city surrounding you, or imagine a GT Sports with less collisions this is where the 360 Reality Audio will shine, I would also love the idea of playing FIFA 19 Be a Pro mode and hearing the San Siro’s Curva Sud on one side and the opponents Curva whistling at the other side of the stadium, just imagine being able to hear your teammates shout at you according with your position on the field that’s awesome.
