Sony Confirms the Development of the PlayStation 5

Sony confirmed today during an interview with the Financial Times, that they are currently developing the PlayStation 4 successor. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said in the interview that “it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.” He didn´t called the new console PlayStation 5, but its probably the name that the company will embrace for their next-generation console.

This announcement comes at a time when various companies have been experimenting with streaming games from remote servers, to enable gamers to play their favorite games across various devices, even on their smartphones.

Sony currently allows some titles to be played on PC with its cloud-based PlayStation Now service, and at one time they also provided access to some TVs and Blu-ray players to stream said games.

Microsoft announced yesterday that they are working on Project xCloud, a state-of-the-art global game-streaming technology that will offer gamers the freedom to play on the device that they want without being locked to a particular device.

Also BBC News said on an article in their website, that Google unveiled Project Stream last week. They said the following:

“The “technical test” allows select gamers to play the latest Assassin’s Creed game via the search firm’s Chrome web browser.

All the internet-based solutions face latency issues – meaning there is a longer lag between pressing a gamepad button and getting a response than there would be if the relevant computing tasks were carried out in the same room as the player.

This delay tends to increase the further away the player is based from the data centre doing the grunt work.

That is a particular problem for fighting and shooting titles, where success or defeat can be determined by how many milliseconds it takes a player to react.”

VG 24/7, on the other hand, said on an article in their website that The Financial Times cites industry sources the following:

“Sony is possibly also working on a tablet capable of connecting to multiple devices. Said device would rely on game streaming, which could be Sony’s answer to Xbox’s Project xCloud.

As to the nature of Sony’s next console, sources tell the magazine that it would be based on a similar architecture to what PS4 is based on today, which isn’t totally surprising considering how comfortable developers are with x86 platforms.”
