Rumor: Grand Theft Auto VI Is Set in 1970s; Coming Only for Next-Gen Consoles

A recent talk with folks at Take-Two Interactive hints us about getting games from the company’s internal studios in a briefer time than before, which leads to long support of the games with rich contents; a way of monetization similar to GaaS that seems to be popular in the industry these days. However, Rockstar is the most important studio for Take-Two and the next project for them is presumably an entry for Grand Theft Auto series, so, why don’t we update you on the hot rumors on it?

According to a Reddit post from JackOLantern1982, the user has gathered some new info on the next GTA from former writers on PC Gamer and Kotaku. He has also shared the details with a friend working at Rockstar to get a confirmation on the rumors but the man hasn’t confirmed nor denied the details, which makes them worthy to check out.

Based on what Jack has shared on Reddit, Rockstar has been developing the next GTA from 2012, with the main stages of development starting from 2015, though a large amount of developers at the studio was working on Red Dead Redemption 2. All Rockstar studios are working on the next GTA and it’s codenamed as “PROJECT AMERICAS”.

The game is set in Vice City and a new area inspired by Rio de Janeiro in Brasil, also its being said that some linear missions will take place in Liberty City and probably another country which is assumed to be Cuba.

The most exciting news comes when we get to know that it’s set during 1970s to 1980s (some say inspired by Netflix’s Narcos series) with only a male playable character. You will start the game as a low-life drug dealer and will grow your business through multiple cities and regions. There will also be a prison through the missions and story. Your character is named Ricardo, and Kacey will be a key character in the game that we don’t have any clue on her yet.

Story-telling will be chapter-based like RDR 2 but the game won’t be as realistic as the sequel for Red Dead Redemption. However, as the time passes in the game, through months and years, things like cars, buildings and other stuff will change in shape and appearance. This will affect the economy, making the earlier cars of the game old but rare. Also, the weather system will be super realistic with hurricanes and floods taking over the city every now and again.

You will be able to establish your drug dealing empire through a semi-simulated and complicated system with things like economy and rivalry having a great influence on it. Some famous GTA-world people might make an appearance in the game like Martin Madrazo.

Some elements from Red Dead Redemption 2 will be transitioned to the next Grand Theft Auto, like being able to carry limited number of guns while you’re walking, and using your car as a huge inventory like the horse in RDR 2.

Since the game will set mostly in South America, you will hear characters speaking in their native language instead of English, though in some parts they will speak English too.

The ending for the main character might be something similar to Arthur’s finale in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Last but not least, the next Grand Theft Auto will definitely hit next-gen consoles and is currently the main project for Rockstar, despite having another game under development which might be Bully 2. However, it’s still in the pre-alpha stage so all the things might be changed. There’s no release window for the game yet.

While the information above is really exciting, we suggest you to take it with a grain of salt until the official news comes from Rockstar itself.
