Rockstar Official Confirms Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

Over the past week, several leaks had pointed to Rockstar Dundee working on Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The collection would be a remaster of the titles, except this time with much of the game being rebuilt in the Unreal Engine.  Maybe due to these leaks, or simply because it was time, but Rockstar has officially confirmed that the classic GTA games are indeed getting remasters.

The collection will comprise Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher later this year. Mobile versions of the game are planned as well, set to release in 2022.

The company stated that the games will feature “across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles, while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals.” They also stated that more details will be made available in the next coming weeks. The existing versions of the games will be getting removed from digital storefronts next week.

These games are planned to release as part of the 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III. Other things planned as part of this include content for GTA Online which will include themed clothing and more. Rockstar has also been hinting at a new expansion for Online, most likely to release by the end of this year. It will include “the upcoming possibility of some unusual activity occurring in and around Southern San Andreas…”

The three games included in the trilogy are considered great games in their own right, but we will have to wait and see if these upgrades do them justice. Hopefully, this will tie fans over until the next-gen upgrade of Grand Theft Auto V releases in March of next year.
