PUBG Rebrands AS PUBG: Battlegrounds

Playerunkown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG, helped kicks start the endless number of Battle Royale games that have been coming out over the past few years. Upon entering beta in March of 2017, the game was met with instant success and was pretty much all anybody talked about. However, before the end of that year, it would have major competition in the free-to-play Fortnite: Battle Royale.

Since then, while maintaining a decent amount of success the game has struggled to stay relevant among the sea of names cropping up in the genre, most of them free-to-play while PUBG still charges 30 dollars for the base game. According to rumors, PUBG is eyeing making the switch to the free-to-play market, but first, they are planning on rebranding.

As spotted by PC gamers, Krafton recently changed the name of Playerunknown’s battlegrounds on steam. Their choice of a new name is PUBG: Battlegrounds, which I guess would make the game now Playeruknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds.

In a response sent to PC gamer, Krafton stated:

“Krafton is actively expanding the PUBG brand through a variety of new experiences set in its universe. Rebranding PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to PUBG: Battlegrounds is the first step in us realizing this vision. Additional titles in the franchise will carry the PUBG name, as you see with our upcoming game, PUBG: New State.”

New State is a battle royale experience similar to the base experience that is being developed for mobile games, it is currently available for pre-registration, which you can do so here. While it does look more hectic than the base experience it should feel familiar to fans of the game already.

Another game set in the PUBG universe, entitled The Callisto Protocol, is also currently in development. It will be set several centuries in the future.
