While two traditional Pokémon games are coming this year, named Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon: Shining Pearl which are sure to excite fans there is a less traditional game slated for earlier next year that I think we have all been keeping our eyes on. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is not only set long before the modern conventions of the pokémon world, but it also features what appears to be the first truly open-world take on the franchise.
Inspired heavily by the Wild Zone featured in Sword and Shield, exploration will feature open areas for the player to explore. Battles are not required to capture them as they will appear on the map for players. However, if a player chooses to battle they will be able to do so seamlessly.
As part of the Pokémon Presents event held today, a new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Arceus was showcased. What it showed was a deeper look at the feudal-inspired cities and people. As well as an in-depth look at the sweeping landscapes the player will traverse. I am not the biggest Pokémon person, but it is hard to say how beautiful the new world looks.
Pokéballs existed even at this point in time so that should be familiar, however on the field a new aiming mechanic comes up to throw the Pokéball at an enemy. Fights themselves seem to play out like before except offering more visual beauty as the location you choose to fight is exactly where the fight occurs as opposed to a battle screen. This means a fight on a hilltop overlooking a lake, happens on a hilltop overlooking a lake.
The most amazing point in the trailer comes when the female protagonist leaps from a mountain before grabbing onto a flying pokemon to fly through the sky. This segway’s into the trainers riding animals through the field as well as through rivers.
