PlatinumGames and Tencent Partnership Announced

PlatinumGames and Tencent have engaged in a partnership to further the cause of self-publishing.

The announcement comes after PlatinumGames president, Kenichi Sato, promised “big news” sometime in 2020, though, he did not specify the nature of that news. The full statement from PlatinumGames regarding the partnership with Tencent is as follows:

“We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.

We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name.

Thank you as always for your continued support. Please look forward to what we have in store.

Kenichi Sato – President and CEO”

Whether the intent to perpetuate an agenda of self-publishing using funding provided by Tencent is the “big news” Sato promised last week is unclear, and only time will tell if more information will be revealed.

However, in an interview with Japanese publication Inside Games, Kenichi Sato suggested PlatinumGames may delve into “the beginning of a new stage” early this year. The Olympics coming to Tokyo in 2020 has made Sato’s desire for PlatinumGames to be that of the company operating at “full speed” during the year, thereby enhancing the public’s focus on Japan.

Moreover, PlatinumGames has two original IPs in development and continues to work on Bayonetta 3—which director Hideki Kamiya, according to Video Game Chronicles, recently said was progressing well.
