Nintendo Has No Metaverse Plans… Yet…

Nintendo has managed to stay out of the major trends currently floating around the industry such as acquisitions, NFTs, and now it looks like we can add metaverses to that list for the time being. In the case of Metaverses, Nintendo seems to have a similar attitude that they have adopted to NFTs. This is to say that they haven’t discredited the concept, but have no intention of participating… At least not yet.

Speaking with investors in a recent Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa answered inquiries pertaining to initiatives pertaining to both the Metaverse and NFTs as a whole. He stated:

The metaverse has captured the attention of many companies around the world, and it has great potential. When the concept of the metaverse is introduced in the media, games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons are sometimes brought up as examples. In that sense, the metaverse is of interest to us.

During his answer, he did not give any definitive answers on Nintendo’s plan moving forward also stating “there is no easy way to define” what the metaverse can bring, but also reiterated that Nintendo’s mission is to provide entertainment first and foremost. He left the door open on the metaverse, stating:

We might consider something if we can find a way to convey a ‘Nintendo approach’ to the metaverse that many people can readily understand, but we do not think that is the situation at the present time.

NFTs have become a bigger part of the industry as of late, with companies such as Ubisoft and SEGA jumping in on the trend. While many companies have tried to include NFTs, such as the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. II attempting it, it is important to note that fan backlash has caused many companies to abandon these plans.
