Following the release of The Sinking City, Frogwares released a trailer this week for their new title, Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One. For the last two decades, Frogwares has been the main publisher of Sherlock games, having published Crimes and Punishments and The Devil’s Daughter. In their exclusive press release to Gamespot, they reveal that it will be a self-publication.
In Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, Frogwares is delving into the origins of Sherlock. Unfortunately, Watson will not be making an appearance as Sherlock’s right hand; instead, a young tattooed man named Jonathan takes that role. Unlike previous adaptations of Sherlock, this will be the youngest ever interpretation of him. The trailer also hints at a more personal story for the budding 21 year-old detective.
“Our version of Sherlock is not a traditional character. He has this raw talent [for discovering the truth] that’s sort of untamed. He’s more arrogant, and much more volatile in this game compared to [other] versions. He has more fun playing with the truth, and he has no problem lying to somebody to get to the bottom of his investigation. But at the same time, he is still young. He will experience some of the things that a young man, 21 years of age, may not be ready to process in this game. This will have certain consequences on his character. Our goal is to show the events that will shape Sherlock as a great detective.”
Moreover, the game will take place at an area outside London, unlike The Devil’s Daughter and most of Crimes and Punishments. The trailer begins with Sherlock standing over a grave with his new partner Jonathan. Following this, the two walk into the Holmes’ family manor, where Sherlock brushes over the letters “S” and “J” carved into the staircase. This is likely in reference to Sherlock and Jonathan, implying they were close childhood friends.
Taking notes from their development of The Sinking City, Frogwares is making Sherlock: Chapter One another open-world title. The previous Sherlock games have both been semi-open world, but the developers boast more freedom in Sherlock: Chapter One. They describe this as “global investigation”, allowing players to take a more open approach to detective work.
The game is implied to be available next year on the PC, PS5, and the Xbox Series X.
