Minecraft Dungeons Is Going Arcade

Mojang announced an arcade version for Minecraft Dungeons, the cabinet is being developed by Play Mechanix with a four-player co-op in mind.

Minecraft Dungeons Arcade features a unique way of keeping the progress made by players,  instead of save files, the player uses physical cards earned through each play session.

“When you play the game, you collect gems and [defeat enemies], which fills your cardTo meter,” …“Once card meters are full, they activate, and you can use them to defeat enemies all around you. Every time you play the game, a card will be given that is yours to keep.”

Mojang announced that there are 60 cards to collect, each player can scan up to five cards per session with the help of a scanner positioned on top of the arcade machine. Minecraft Dungeons Arcade also features the familiar multiplayer, dungeon-crawling gameplay, but the game has been slightly changed to boost the experience offered by an arcade cabinet.

“If you take a step back, you can see the similarities between the two, but when you take a step into [a consumer] game, it’s like a waltz,” says Will Carlin, creative director at Play Mechanix. “An arcade game on the other hand is some kind of super break-dancing speed experience – it’s about intensity of the moment, and surviving as long as possible – an intense burst of fun!”

A limited number of Minecraft Dungeons Arcade cabinets are currently being distributed across North America for testing, and more will be released later this year.
