Microsoft Creates a New Subsidiary Called ‘Vault’

Following the massive acquisition of ZeniMax Media, Microsoft has created a new division called Vault.

The registration of Vault has been posted on the European Commission’s website which reveals Microsoft’s plan to secure the approval for its $7.5bn acquisition of ZeniMax on the region:

The concentration is accomplished by way of a merger pursuant to which a newly created Microsoft subsidiary (‘Vault’) will be merged with and into ZeniMax.

The document was a necessary step of the acquisition as it’s required for Microsoft to offer interested parties to comment on or challenge the acquisition by February 15, 2021.

Microsoft announced its acquisition of Zenimax in September of 2020, and the deal now seems to be moving towards completion. The approval from the European Commission was sought at the end of January, with a provisional deadline set for March 5.  The commission is determining if the merger is breaking any rules in the region, but as there haven’t been any comments on that topic, it’s expected that the merger will be made official on March 5.

During a recent conference, Xbox CFO Tim Stuart confirmed that the acquisition of ZeniMax Media is not a strategy to take games from other platforms, the vision of the company is to establish a ‘first on’, or ‘best played on’ marketing strategy.

Phil Spencer also affirmed that the heavy investment was influenced by the necessity to add more games to the ever-growing Xbox Game Pass library.

“Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games.

But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us.”

The new Microsoft division, Vault is a clear tribute to the Fallout series and an appropriate name for a new division of Microsoft and Xbox. Being said this, there is not much revealed about the new company.
