In keeping with its love of giving agents numbers for names, IO interactive has announced it is currently working on a James Bond video game, Project 007, focusing on the spy’s origin.
In a teaser trailer released today, November 19, 2020, the developer of Hitman acclaim, in collaboration with MGM, EON Productions, and Delphi, is tackling one of the most iconic figures in the modern zeitgeist. IO Interactive is a prime candidate for taking on such an endeavor, having multiple award-winning titles in the stealth genre.
Using IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier technology, the game will be developed for next generation hardware. Though James Bond is an intellectual property that has been iterated on multiple times through the video game medium, Bond’s games typically center around after Bond has been discovered, focusing on gunfights and open combat. A 007 video game focused on stealth and true espionage has yet to be done properly. Bond’s world is perfect for a next generation stealth game, and it’s been quite some time since fans of the spy got their hands on a quality James Bond title.
With the story centered around Bond’s origin, this game has the potential to be unique with it not being another movie tie-in.
“It’s true that once in a while, the stars do align in our industry,” said Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, “Creating an original Bond game is a monumental undertaking and I truly believe that IO Interactive, working closely with our creative partners at EON and MGM, can deliver something extremely special for our players and communities. Our passionate team is excited to unleash their creativity into the iconic James Bond universe and craft the most ambitious game in the history of our studio.”
The trailer gives no information other than who is working on the project, but Project 007 is sure to be a unique spin on the James Bond video game formula.
