Hideo Kojima Blames Battle Royale as a Way of Making Money

After having decades of experience on developing video games, Hideo Kojima now is attempting to bring a whole new genre to the industry. If he succeeds in what he’s dreaming of, the result will be an extraordinary title in the history of video games. Death Stranding looks to have many creative features in gameplay that have been accompanied with a complicated story. However, not everyone in the industry looking for what Kojima wants to achieve, which makes Kojima to blame those who think about money.

During a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2019, which was dedicated to Hideo Kojima and Nicolas Winding Refn, the two famous directors talked about their great relationship throughout the development process of Death Stranding. When Kojima was asked about his purpose for making something really different compared to the other game developers, he said:

There’s no reason to create something that’s already there. I want to create something that gives more inspiration to the world.

The easiest way to make money is to make a game where everyone is on an island trying to shoot each other. I don’t want to make that.

Second part of his answer definitely touches Battle Royale games and their developers. In my opinion, Kojima is right on this matter. Battle Royale titles in recent years have become a way of monetizing for developers than creating a worthy game that delivers something to players. Battle Royale has grown enough to bleed into many genres even Sports. The mode has also caused the increase of microtransactions within the games that doesn’t fit into the industry at all.

Death Stranding will be available on November 8 exclusively for PlayStation 4.
