Hearthstone Devs Think Underwater Expansion A “Fun Idea”

As Hearthstone winds down its Year of the Dragon theme with the ‘Descent of Dragons’ expansion, many players wonder what’s coming next to the digital collectible card game.

In an interview with AusGamersHearthstone Lead Designer Dean Ayala and Producer Melissa Corning were circumspect in regards to what the next few expansions and yearly theme would entail, but shared some details regarding ideas that had not yet progressed beyond simple brainstorming.

“It’s kind of strange to talk about,” Dean told AusGamer. “The ones that linger on are the ones I think that we’re going to do. One that we haven’t ever fleshed out is the idea of an underwater expansion. I feel comfortable talking about that because I know it’s not on the horizon. That idea of the Naga and going underwater and then there’s some like cool, fancy tropes of Atlantis and underwater treasure in cities, pirates, and all that kind of stuff. That seems like it would be a fun theme to explore. We’re always looking at it too and wondering if there’s something there. There’s a bunch of themes like that though, and we’re lucky to work in the Warcraft universe which has such a rich history.”

While Dean specifically stated an underwater-themed expansion for Hearthstone isn’t something that would arrive in the near future, it’s interesting to note that he also said he thinks it’s something the team will do at some point. Hearthstone‘s expansion and use of Warcraft lore has generated one of the more enjoyable CCG’s available, appealing to both players of other card games and the millions of gamers across the globe who adore the Warcraft universe and its characters, locales, and history.

In other recent Hearthstone news, the ‘Descent of Dragon’s expansion launched last week, bringing with it 135 new cards and a new keyword, “invoke,” which triggers the spell effect of Galakrond’s Hero Power. To celebrate the launch of the expansion, Hearthstone players who log into the game will be awarded three ‘Descent of Dragons’ card packs and all five Galakrond Hero cards free. They will also receive two neutral Shield of Galakrond minions featuring the new invoke keyword. Players can rack up a further epic variety of rewards by completing a series of six new Legendary daily quests, including five additional ‘Descent of Dragons’ card packs, two ‘Rise of Shadows’ card packs, two ‘Saviors of Uldum’ card packs, and 200 gold.
