Fortnite On Switch Ceases Cross-Play With Xbox One and PS4

With the argument of cross-play and the idea of merging a single game’s community through multiple systems, there still seems to be a few hindrances. One major flaw is performance differences between one console or system to the next. Epic Games has realized this issue as their latest patch for Fortnite on Switch looks to address the lingering performance issue on the hybrid console.

It has been reported that due to the struggles the latest Nintendo console sees when trying to hit the 30 fps cap in Fortnite, that it has been giving Xbox One and PS4 players an unfair advantage when paired with Switch players. To combat this problem, patch 8.10 has completely negated the random pooling of cross-play with Sony and Xbox systems. This means Switch players will be pooled with mobile players which is stated to bring a “better per-game experience for both Mobile and Switch players”.

While cross-play has been in the middle of some already heated discussions, mostly revolving around Sony’s reluctancy towards the feature, it seems some flaws are beginning to make themselves apparent. The performance variants from each system is obvious, especially when comparing the Switch’s considerably lower performance compared to that of the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.

There are a plethora of other patch notes, such as the additions of the hamster ball vehicle “The Baller” and one-time weapon providing vending machines. The full list of details regarding patch 8.10 can be found at the Epic Games website.
