Slitherine Ltd. is going to release Empires Apart next year. The agreement with ambitious developer DESTINYbit sets the release date in the second half of 2017, so it will take some time to see the game, but this game as it is now, already shows all the signs of delivering on where the popular Age of Empires left off.
