EA is close to securing an extension in the exclusive deal with the National Football League for the Madden series, as reported by Sports Business Daily via GameIndustry.Biz.
EA Sports’ current deal is set to expire after the ’21 season. 2K still expects to produce non-simulation titles with NFL rights. Owners will meet remotely on Thursday, when most of the agenda focuses on possible changes on the field, including a “sky judge” booth official and an option to execute an offensive play instead of an onside kick. A voting will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, May 27, if approved, EA will have exclusive rights of the NFL logo and all its teams until 2025. The EA petition also suggest that the publisher is interested in producing more NFL games outside the Madden series, as they request the non-exclusive rights for arcade-style games and “additional embedded companion apps/modes.” The petition for a one year extension could be accomplished if the developer achieve “certain revenue goals”
A few months ago, Take-Two Interactive managed to secure the NFL’s license to create a non-simulation football game. EA is now in a hurry to find a way to make NFL games more profitable. The company has seen Android and iOS as a good platform to create a new game following the “game-as-a-service” approach.
