After months of rumors and speculation, Call of Duty: Vanguard has officially been revealed to the public. Vanguard will see the series return for the seventh time to World War II for a campaign that Sledgehammer Games has stated they hope will feel new to longtime fans.
Sledgehammer Games will be leading on this game, something that they have not done since Call of Duty: WWII back in 2017. This time they will be shaking up the formula a bit by actually setting the game after the official end of World War II. Hitler is already dead by this point when the allies learn of “Operation Pheonix”, something to facilitate “Hitler’s successor.”
While World War II may be ‘over’ by this point in time the trailer makes clear that there is still a major conflict going on. During the trailer we large scale battles occurring over land and sea, as well small groups of special forces staying low key till it is time to strike. Given how great games can look these days it is hard to say if this trailer is CGI or in-game, though it did look like it had a mix of both.
The game will see its fictitious villain in Heinrich Freisinger who is based on the real Gestapo operative Heinrich Müller. In real life, a real-life successor for Adolf Hitler was Karl Dönitz. However, since Karl almost immediately surrender to the allied forces I can see why they sought a new villain.
The major hook this time around, apart from the game being set in a new conflict post-WWII is that it will explore the “birth of special forces.” The game will follow a team of four individuals from different countries tasked with stopping Operation Pheonix. They include Arthur Kingsley from Great Britain, Polina Petrova from the Soviet Union, Wade Jackson from the USA, and Lucas Riggs of Australia.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is slated for release on November 5, 2021. On the Call of Duty: Warzone side of things, it will be getting a new map sometime this year that will tie into Vanguard.
