Bioshock 4 To Run On Unreal Engine 5

The Unreal Engine 5 has only been in early access for about a day and already it sounds like it is getting plenty of use. Earlier today it was announced the latest entry of Dragon Quest would be using it (link to that article here). Now the beloved Bioshock series looks to make it’s return on it.

If a new job posting is anything to go by, development of Bioshock 4 is ramping up and being tailored for the new engine. According to the ad, Which was posted by Developer Cloud Chamber:

We are looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer to join our Gameplay team. In this role you will own a large part of our World Systems and Player Progression systems. You will work collaboratively with Design, Animation, Audio, and Art to build some of these large systems and own their technical creation from the ground up, starting with prototyping, and carrying them all the way to a polished state. During this process you will have constant opportunities to help elevate, problem solve, and steer these ideas as they develop.

Among the various job requirements listed is one which reads:

  • Work within Unreal Engine 5 adapting existing systems and building new technology in order to fulfill the project’s technical needs and creative goals.

Cloud Chamber is a team made up of many past Bioshock Development veterans, brought in to develop a new title for the series. Last time the project was spoken of  it was still in the earliest stages of development. Since Bioshock 4 is their only game at this time, it is safe to assume that the two are connected.

The usage of this engine will limit the release to current gen systems (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.) Bioshock 4 has officially been in development since 2019 with no official release window.
