According to industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls, the PlayStation 5 is on track to outsell the Xbox Series X in 2022. In a report from Ampere Analysis, the analyst spoke about both companies had struggled to keep a steady stock of their latest consoles available to consumers since they launched in 2020. This struggle has continued through 2021 for both the PS5 and Series X, with both a component shortage, as well as shipping problems, have kept them in short supply.

Harding continued that he expects that 2022 will see the stock of both consoles increase slowly over the year, though it still remains questionable whether they will be readily available by year-end. He then went on to state “Our expectation is that Sony will outsell Microsoft two-to-one.”
Despite the fact that he expects the PS5 to sell 18 million PS5s compared to only 9 million Xbox Series X|S, he expects that Nintendo will have more sales than both of them at 21 million. The analyst stated that this demand will be driven primarily by the OLED model that was released last year.
He also expects that gaming services will continue to grow, expecting them to increase by 27% across North America and Europe and that they are “going to be the main part of the market”, as well as “generate the most growth.” Streaming-only services, he stated, will be worth 6% of the market.
This analysis doesn’t take a few things into account that could ultimately affect this growth. For starters. Microsoft announced a nearly $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which is not set to close until 2023. While existing deals with Sony will be respected by Microsoft, the future beyond that is unclear but will definitely help the Xbox and Game Pass in the long run.
Additionally, while the OLED model of the Nintendo Switch was a far cry from the rumored 4k switch, many leaks still believe that model is still coming this year. With the Nintendo Switch being over 5 years old, there is a possibility that the rumored ‘4k’ model is in actuality a follow-up console to the Switch, though this is just speculation.
