Amazon Game Studios Working On Lord of the Rings MMO

Game holding company Leyou and game publisher Athlon Games announced last fall that they were currently working with an “unnamed” partner developing a massive multiplayer online title covering the Lord of the Ring universe. The game has largely stayed out of the spotlight, that is until the recent announcement from Amazon’s game developing division – Amazon Game Studios – that they were the developers working on the upcoming title.

The announced title is expected to follow suit with other Leyou own titles as a free-to-play experience for both PC and consoles. Amazon has been developing the new MMO title in partnership with Athlon Games, with the publisher detailing the upcoming title as an experience that will take place “at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings” and players will have the opportunity for “exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.”

The new Lord of the Rings title is the second MMO currently in development at Amazon Game Studios, with the 2016 announced New World title still finding its way to release. While this new experience is sure to invoke a new experience within the beloved fantasy universe, it’s pretty uncertain as to if two separate Lord of the Rings online titles can exist at the same time – with the other being the 2007 released Lord of the Rings Online which is still seeing scattered updates.

There’s no current release date set in place for the new Amazon developed MMO but it is expected to release on consoles and PC.
