Mario & Luigi Developer AlphaDream Dives into the Smartphone Market

AlphaDream known for its work on the Mario & Luigi game series over the years is recruiting on his website, there are some job applications referencing the Nintendo Switch, along with game development for smartphones and also the PlayStation 4.

In partnership with Nintendo, AlphaDream has produced software for the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.  The company’s staff includes prominent former developers from Square, such as Chihiro Fujioka  known for directing Super Mario RPG.

“What exactly this means at this point in time is hard to fathom, but at the very least, it could be a signal the company might finally move away from the 3DS. With various other developers branching out to the mobile market over the past few years, it would not be a surprise if AlphaDream was equally as eager to try its luck. As for the reference to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, who knows what the Japan-based developer could have in mind for either platform.

During a Nintendo Direct earlier this year, it was revealed a 3DS port of AlphaDream’s Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story would be released in 2019 – featuring updated graphics and adding a new game called Bowser Jr’s Journey.”

AlphaDream was founded in 2000 by Tetsuo Mizuno, the past president of Square. Their first game, Koto Battle, was a Pokémon-style role-playing game, wherein the player battles three of their twenty character cards against AI opponents. It was released in March 2001 for the Game Boy Color. While it remains a Japan-only game, it was later re-released for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.

AlphaDream’s next big game was Tomato Adventure, released in January 2002, co-developed with Graphic Research and directed by Chihiro Fujioka of Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy Legend III.
