Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2 Gets Release Date

W knew that Psychonauts 2 would be releasing this year. Last year Double Fine studios stated that the game will be delayed from 2020 into 2021 for extra time to polish. Since the world was suffering from an epidemic at the time it was hard to blame them. Earlier this year we were also informed that most, if not all, of the game, was playable internally. The only question that was really left was when will we get our hands on the trippy platforming game.

Well, thanks to the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase not only did we get a trailer but we were given a date that we can expect to play the game. The trailer features the return of Richard Steven Horvitz as the main character Razputin “Raz” Aquato. It also features character and game design inspired by the Psychedelic 60s, similar to the original.

The was crowdfunded using Fig in 2015. By 2016 the title had already managed to raise over 4 million dollars.  Since then the game has received constant updates on the platform while only showing a few trailers since then.

It was announced that Double Fine had been purchased by Xbox game studios back in 2019 at E3. This became a source of confusion since the game was crowdfunded with an expectation it would have a broad release. Tim Schafer, founder of the company and driving force behind its games, has been very consistent that the release of the game on multiple consoles would not be affected by the Acquisition.

After the show, both an Xbox media release and a tweet from Double Fine again confirmed this. The only thing that is unclear is if a PS5 upgraded version will be available or if the game will only be enhanced for the Xbox Series X.

Psychonauts 2 releases August 25, 2021. It will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility.
