Rumour: Nintendo Switch Will Get GameCube Games

According to Eurogamer’s sources the Nintendo Switch will feature a Virtual Console capable of running GameCube games, this feature has proved been very succesful for Nintendo having the Wii, Wii U and 3DS all featured a Virtual Console service for downloading games released on earlier Nintendo gaming systems. It’s very likely that Nintendo Switch will be no different.

Although Nintendo hasn’t given any details on what its plans are for the Virtual Console on the upcoming Nintendo Switch,

According to Eurogamer’s sources, the following titles will be coming to the Virtual Console:

  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Luigi’s Mansion
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee

This is a fairly logical progression when you consider that the service already offers Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS titles. Also, given that the Switch is using Nvidia tech, it’s worth pointing out that last year’s Nvidia Shield TV microconsole is capable of running GameCube games at 1080p.

The motivation with Melee is to get an official version out there for fans to easily play, which could also help with the eSports sector if Nintendo can persuade players to shift from ageing machines to downloadable versions.

Animal Crossing is also on the way to being ready, and apparently will include the playable NES games found in the original.

In 2012, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that GameCube games could make it for the Nintendo Wii U’s Virtual Console, but that never happened.”
