Steam users have noticed that PlayStation games that have now been released on the PC platform have switched publishers to PlayStation PC LLC from the previous Playstation Mobile label the company had used for these releases prior. According to the Corporation Wiki, Sony Interactive Entertainment had registered this label back in April, via their California-based headquarters.
While the name seems to simply be symbolic, with no change to corporate policy toward PC releases, it does present another indication that the company view PC gaming as a valuable part of its strategy moving forward. Sony has seen success with releases such as Horizon: Zero Dawn and Days Gone, and has other titles such as the 2018 reboot of God of War, as well as all five Uncharted games are soon set to join them.
There have also been rumors of several other PlayStation titles that might also be on the way in the future, including the PlayStation 5 launch title Sackboy: A Big Adventure as well as the popular souls game Bloodborne. While not all of these titles are known, earlier this year SIE Boss Jim Ryan stated that a slate of games would be coming to PC. He stated, during an interview with GQ:
I think a few things changed. We find ourselves now in early 2021 with our development studios and the games that they make in better shape than they’ve ever been before. Particularly from the latter half of the PS4 cycle, our studios made some wonderful, great games.
There’s an opportunity to expose those great games to a wider audience and recognize the economics of game development, which are not always straightforward. The cost of making games goes up with each cycle, as the caliber of the IP has improved. Also, our ease of making it available to non-console owners has grown. So it’s a fairly straightforward decision for us to make.
Earlier this year Sony acquired Dutch technical studio Nixxes Software, which are known for their work on PC ports of games like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. It’s clear that Sony is serious about the PC market now, or at least more so than they had been a year ago.
