One of the first games showcased for the Switch way back when was the next installment in the Shin Megami Tensei series, Shin Megami Tensei V. It remains quiet for a while until early this year when both it and the remaster of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne were announced for release within the year.
Thanks to the Nintendo Direct today, we not only got a fuller look at the game, but also a release date for the game.
The game will be set in modern-day Tokyo. As your character tries to go about his life he is pulled into another dimension. Similar to other games in the franchise this world depicts a post-apocalyptic city in a wasteland of sand. The player will have to gather demons as they explore to survive the harsh new world they find themselves in.
The janken style of combat will return in this installment of the franchise. Elemental attacks deal extra damage to foes weak again them and earn the player’s party an extra turn. The combat structure will also return to a perspective similar to Nocturne, allowing the full party to be seen. The DS and 3DS entries in the series all have chosen for first-person fight screens, similar to earlier games in the series.
Multiple series staples return to the game such as the need to convince demons through dialogue to join you. The element has been largely kept through both the mainline series and its spinoffs, bar a few. Fusing persons will also once again play a big role as you progress in the story.
In the complex web that the SMT franchise has spun, Shin Megami Tensei is both a spin-off and the main franchise. First premiering in 1987, the Megami Tensei franchise was based on the book Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. A sequel to that game was released but the company opted to release the third game like Shin Megami Tensei. This was to separate the new game from the book and create a new story with their branding. This would be the mainline series from that point on.
Shin Megami Tensei V will release exclusively for the Nintendo switch on November 12, 2021
