After the success of Ninja Theory’s game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Microsoft made the bold move to purchase the company in their move to improve the companies first-party lineup moving into their next generation of hardware. This move proved to be a very good one as the 2019 Video Game Awards gave us our first look at the gorgeous sequel, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

While it was already a ways away, we all know what happened next. The covid 19 pandemic that forced much of us inside for most of 2020 also saw most countries close their borders to travelers, which saw the team at Ninja Theory unable to do location scouting which definitely caused some form of delay to development. Two years later we have finally gotten our first look at the gameplay for the title, which looks both gorgeous and cinematic.

The gameplay trailer starts pretty close to its original trailer in 2019, with Senua on a beach as some form of big battle takes place. The game then seamlessly moves into gameplay with Senua leading a team into a cave that sees her face off against a very large enemy.

As with many games these days, I am particularly reminded of the upcoming Sifu, it is hard to tell without button prompts or a hud if moments that are showcased are gameplay or cutscene. At one point while running backward she calls on multiple allies to offer her their spears. They do so in moments that look cinematic, but too stuffed into what appeared to be gameplay to actually be. My point is, it really looks like it is nailing what it is going for.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was not offered a release date during the event, but it will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and other platforms through Xbox Cloud Gaming when it does.
