According to reports from VGC, a customization company selling PS5 faceplates has received a lawsuit from Sony Interactive Entertainment, where they demand CustomizeMyPlates to stop using the PlayStation 5 and Sony brand.
Company ‘CustomizeMyPlates’ received a complaint from the Japanese tech giant, but reportedly they were convinced that there was no wrongdoing in the manufacture of custom plates for changing the appearance of the upcoming PlayStation 5. Explaining the situation to VGC, the company affirms that they would be “wiser” in the future as they hope to find a legal loophole that allows them to continue the manufacture and sales of the outer plates.
“Before we launched, we did our due diligence and were of the opinion that because Sony only had pending patents on the faceplates there would be no problem,” “But after only a day of our website being live, Sony’s lawyers asked us to change our name (at the time PlateStation5), due to trademark infringements. We thought this switch would be enough to keep everyone happy, and honestly were hoping so since we were already underway with our product development.
“But then Sony’s lawyers told us it was their opinion, Sony’s intellectual property extended to the faceplates, and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court.”
CustomizeMyPlates affirms that Sony’s potential lawsuit has forced them to cancel and refund all the faceplate orders worldwide “we are extremely disappointed about this but we have no other option.” Said a spokesperson to VGC.
It’s important to mention that the outer plates sold by CustomizeMyPlates were not cheap, selling from an estimate of 40 USD, and while some users might want to have its PS5 customized from day one, it’s better to expect the official product from Sony Interactive Entertainment and support the company. Probably, the custom plates sold by Sony could even be cheaper than the “premium” plates sold by the unofficial company.
In June 2020, Matt MacLauring, Vice President of UX design at PlayStation revealed that the next-gen console will be the most customizable console ever released from Sony. MacLauring’s statement was confirmed by PlayStation’s official teardown of the console where it was confirmed that the PS5 features swappable outer plates that are easily removable by the users without the need for any tools.
