Update: Jason Schreier has released a new report backing up his claims, citing “people familiar with the company’s plans.” According to the report, online games such as Marathon and MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls will still be released on PC, but titles like Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5. Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly scrapped plans to bring Ghost of Yotei and other internally developed games to PC.
The report states that a faction within Sony Interactive Entertainment expressed concerns that releasing games on PC could damage the PlayStation console brand and hurt sales of the PlayStation 5 and its successors. However, this change does not seem to affect Sony Interactive Entertainment published titles by external developers, such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Kena: Scars of Kosmora, which are still planned for release on PC this year.
On a recent episode of the Triple Click podcast, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier suggested that Sony may stop bringing its traditional single-player exclusives to PC, with titles such as Wolverine potentially not launching on the platform at all. However, he noted that the company still plans to release its live-service games on PC to reach a broader audience. “I think for them, their strategy is like, live service games are coming to PC,” Schreier said. “But I think the sense I’m getting is that they’re backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff like traditional single-player stuff on PC.”
Referencing the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, Schreier said Sony currently appears to have no plans to release it on PC. “I mean even if they don’t, we are seeing Wolverine is coming on September 15th, and that’s not coming to PC. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 only,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it never came to PC, but even if it does you have a strong idea of what that is and that you need a PlayStation to play it at least for the indefinite future.” Schreier added that he is not yet ready to publish a full report on the matter but emphasized that his comments were not mere speculation. “I mean, it’s not speculation, but sometimes topics come up on the show before I’m quite ready to publish a story about them. More to come soon I’m sure,” he said. Marvel’s Wolverine will launch on September 15 for PlayStation 5.
