PlayStation Boss Hints that the PS5 Could be a Portable Console

Sony’s PlayStation chief, John Kodera, hinted that the much-anticipated PS5 video game console could be a new portable PlayStation handheld. Last week, he revealed to Bloomberg that the next PlayStation system won’t launch until 2021 at the earliest.

John Kodera said to Bloomberg, that portable gaming is something that gamers want – the success of the Nintendo Switch and mobile games certainly seem to bear that out – and that it is something Sony is exploring.

Here is one important key quote by Kodera:

“In my opinion, rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it [portable gaming] as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options.”

The other big question for Sony’s PlayStation business is the timing of a successor to the PlayStation 4, which is now five years old. Kodera declined to provide a timeline or specifics for a new console, saying only that a new device is being designed around making it easy for developers to create games and also with an eye on easier hardware manufacturing.

“We’ll be leveraging the knowledge and experience of having built four generations of consoles,” Kodera said.

Kodera’s comments came a day after Sony issued conservative earnings targets across most of its businesses, including a drop in PlayStation operating profits by March 2021 from the current fiscal year. Kodera was asked if the decline will be because of higher marketing costs and hardware subsidies related to the introduction of a PlayStation 5, Kodera declined to comment.

The Nintendo Switch’s success, alongside the industry-shifting dominance of mobile games, means that Sony may be giving their complete attention towards an upcoming PSP console, which is rumoured to boast 5G and streaming technology.
