New Witcher Title is Not The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red released a teaser of a new entry in The Witcher Saga yesterday, and this sent fans into a frenzy with speculation. Many were wondering if it could be a reboot or spin-off, or what part Ciri could be playing in this new game. Radek Grabowski, global PR for CD Projekt Red has taken to Twitter to set the record straight:

“What we have NOT announced today:

– A game called The Witcher 4.

– A game exclusive to one storefront.

It was our initial confirmation of a new saga in The Witcher franchise. Right now, we are not discussing any specifics in terms or story, characters, mechanics, or plot details.”

Even though we did not get much information to go on from Grabowski, observant fans may have already recognized that the pendant shown in the teaser is not, in fact, the wolf pendant that is the symbol of the School of the Wolf which the previous protagonist Geralt of Rivia belongs to. In an interview with Eurogamer, global communication director Robert Malinowski has confirmed that the pendant is not from any school that is currently considered canon:

“Some mysteries should not be so mysterious. I can confirm that the medallion is, in fact, shaped after a lynx.”

– Robert Malinowski to Eurogamer

The School of the Lynx will therefore be a completely new school that CD Projekt Red is inventing for this new game. The creation of new schools is not a new thing for CDPR, as the original novels by Andrzej Sapkowski only featured the schools of the Wolf, Cat, and Griffin. CDPR has since added the schools of the Bear, Viper, Manticore and Crane into the mix.

While there is no School of the Lynx currently, it is also not the first time this school has been mentioned. A popular Witcher fan fiction details a story in which existing characters Lambert and Keira Metz come in contact with the school, though it is unknown at this point whether this story has influenced CDPR’s direction for this new game at all.
