Wipeout

New Wipeout Game Coming To PS5 – Rumor

Wipeout, the futuristic racing game might be making a return onto the PlayStation 5 if a new rumor is to be believed. With added power that the PlayStation 5 boasts, as well as its SSD that allowed Ratchet & Clank to play as well as it did, this would definitely prove a smart decision if true.\

The wipeout franchise first premiered back in 1995, and was developed by Psygnosis. Stylistically similar to the F-Zero franchise the game revolved around spaceship-style supercars speeding around complex courses at high speeds. The game jumped around from system to system, appearing on Playstation, Nintendo, Sega, and pc.

This was until 2008 when the franchise arrived on PlayStation 3 and was developed by the same studio, now known as Studio Liverpool. They would then develop a follow-up in 2012 as a launch title for the PlayStation Vita. A remaster of both of these games would be developed by XDev, and would eventually include PSVR support.

According to Shpeshal Nick, co-founder of Xbox Era, this new game is in development with a planned release not only on the PlayStation 5, but also as a game for the PSVR2 which we know is in development as well.

As he states, XDev will return to help with the development but will not be the primary developers. In a later statement, he thinks that the developer behind the game might be Destruction AllStars developer Lucid Games. As he points out in his tweet the project is most likely early in development.

The Wipeout franchise is a fun racing series that oftentimes slips under the radar. It will be interesting to see where they take the franchise now, with this next game offering a major jump in technology since the last game in the series was released. With the remaster doing enough to increase exposure it does feel like the time is right for more Wipeout.
