E3 2022 has reportedly been cancelled altogether. This goes against previous reports that a digital only event would be taking place this year. In January, the ESA had announced that they were cancelling the in-person event due to concerns about Omicron, but have remained silent about whether or not a digital E3 would be held. Soon after this announcement, insider Jeff Grubb claimed that the entire event had likely been cancelled too. This may have been false at the time, because earlier this month popular insider Tom Henderson reported that emails had been sent out to developers stating that the digital only event would still be taking place. Now, Razer rep Will Powers claims to have received an email stating that the digital event has also been cancelled:

This will effectively cancel E3 altogether. According to IGNs sources, discussions about the digital event has been ongoing since January, but never picked up any momentum, so the ESA has decided to pack it up and try again next year. In a statement to IGN, the ESA said:
“We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience. We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.”
But gaming fans don’t need to worry about not having a games show in June. As if he was waiting on the cancellation, Geoff Keighley immediately announced that Summer Games Fest would be returning in June. The show will begin with a “spectacular live kickoff show” hosted by the man himself.
