Nintendo released a new statement on its official website announcing that, starting in May 2026, first-party Nintendo titles for Switch 2 will have different MSRP for digital and physical releases. The publisher revealed that this change will begin with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. In the announcement, the company stated, “Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format.” This shift further indicates that game studios and companies are moving away from physical releases to reduce production costs.
In recent news, according to a new report by Nikkei, Nintendo has been forced to comply with the European Union’s “right to repair” policy. As a result, the company must change the console’s design and specifications to include a replaceable battery. In 2023, the EU announced a regulation requiring all handheld consoles to feature replaceable batteries by 2027. While this does not affect the original Switch and instead applies to the Switch 2, it means the first console will likely be discontinued in the region if a new version is not released.
